Direct Song is growing ...
If you not been to direct song recently, they've been adding a bunch of stuff.
Jeremy Soule is a very active
For GuildWars you have
Original Soundtrack
Sorrow's Furnace Mini-Pak
BattlePak One
GW Special Edition Pak (not sure what it contains but it exists w/ the "Special" Edition of GW)
Future GuildWars
Maybe a "special" pak for the CE of factions or the Factions OST (not sure which)
Assume a Faction Soundtrack..
Assume a 2nd "BattlePak" to expand Factions music beyond original score
But at the same time they've added:
Elder Scrolls III Morrowind
*Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion
*Dungeon Seige II
and coming soon Prey
* The price has jumped to 9.99 on these, assume Prey will be the same, mind you the above does not add to GuildWars.

Sorrow's Furnace Mini-Pak is free.
www.directsong.com, create an account, then grab the free Sorrow's Furnace.
When you install any guildwars directsong packs, it makes a change to your computer. When GW launched it looks for this change and if it see's it will play the higher quailty audio files (when it's "triggered" by guild wars) from your hard drive instead of the built in game music.
If you grab the Sorrow's Furnace mini-pak, you would only hear this if your in Grenth's Footprint, Warcamp or SF.

I disabled DirectSong a while before I started messing around in Furnace. I'll have to re-enable it now, thanks for reminding me...

Re-Download any paks, it will update the "triggers" that greatly reduce's the same tracks over and over again issue that made the game very bland after the directsong paks were installed.

The SF minipack plays the music when you're in Grenth's/Furnace/Warcamp? Odd, I thought that music always played there, and this minipak was not integrated with the game, and was just a little "mini-soundtrack" playlist of sorts for listening to in Windows Media Player/Winamp/Etc.

The audio files from the DirectSong are of a higher sound quality but will play the same tracks when the game calls for the next song as it would if you did not have it as well as stand alone ability to play the tracks within WMP.
When the battle pak one came out, the changed it so all towns / outposts play the same tracks over and over again and the carefully planned music that came with the game as to what and when was kinda thrown out the window
They have greatly improved and "tweaked" what plays where right around the time of PvP faction event.

Is it even worth it to download the DirectSong paks?
Are they even the higher quality that most speak of?
I tried the samples at the site and it doesn't sound much different than what's already there.

I agree...I just got the MiniPak because the SF/Grenth's music are some of the most intense and awesomely-orchestrated pieces yet.
The music that plays in Borlis Pass, at Rurik's cutscene is great as well, but only plays then and on the login screen (after the Factions, Pre-searing, and Kryta themes play). That's awesome, and appears very rarely ingame. The rest, I'm not sure if it's worth it.
In truth, I recorded that Borlis Pass music using Frap's (hid the interface, and turned the sound slider down) so I just had the pure music. All that desperation for something so good, it beats spending money in reality for a soundtrack that has nothing I want but that. I call that Borlis Pass music, "Rurik's Theme". I believe the Soundtrack has a "Prince Rurik's Theme" - whether or not it's the Borlis Pass music, any of you diehard DirectSongers feel free to let me know out of extreme curiosity.

Same here - as far as I am concerned they can keep their DRM infested audiofiles. I prefer my music to be without handcuffs. Thanks, but no thanks.

Stick to Orginal Soundtracks (Guildwars OST, Morrowind, Oblivion, Dungeon Seige II), come with full unlimited cd-burning rights so you can create a standard audio cd and then do what every you want with.
Aka make a standard cd, encode to your favorite app, then do what you want with.
The SF and GW Battle Pak I are the one's that don't have burning rights and are very restrictive.
I too hate DRM but since this is the only way for GW to have enhanced music, I'm stuck with it too.
I loved the 1st OST for guildwars and the SF pak and loved DirectSong. When Battelpak I came out for a while, I did end up disapling DS due to repeat tracks. They fixed (almost completely) this situation when the 1st Factions PvP event came out.
I've been recently having DSII soundtrack play and loop when playing GW recently.

I personally love the Morrowind stuff, especially the main theme. Jeremy Soule has done an unbelievable amount of game soundtracks.
Go to his homepage and click on the 'credits' tab. Way more stuff than I thought..
Nice to get a bit of a peek on the Oblivion music there as well, great remix of the Morrowwind theme there (well the 30 secs you can listen too anyway).

I just like my rock/metal music lol. Game music is okay sometimes, but it gets boring after awhile.

That song is "Tasca's Demise" and it plays once in a while in Droknar's Forge... but it's a good song.

I downloaded it after considerable scans of the files to check for rootkits and other hidden files. I love the music, the day that I realised that my favourite gaming soundtracks were actually written by the same guy was a revelation. I sat there thinking for ages that some of the GW music was vaguely familiar and then it hit me where I had heard some of the themes.
Google was a very good friend to me that day

And funnily enough, these packs are the only music that's actually new. The GW original soundtrack comes with CE, for example, too. Morrowind has the complete soundtrack in MP3 format in its game directory.

No, you're not "stuck" with it, YOU are supporting DRM by buying it, thus you actually encouraging them to use DRM. So please don't say you hate it. Nobody forced you to buy that DRM-ware. If people wouldn't buy anything with DRM, DRM wouldn't exist. Simple as that.
Don't you think I'd like to have enhanced music, too? I "enhance" my GW music by running XMMS/Winamp in the background. Works too and no handcuffs attached.

Maybe DRM or any other copy protection exists because so many users rather copy the music files from the Internet than buy them from the stores? There is plenty of asses who copy them for free even they would cost .10 cents per track because they get them for free and are proud of that.
I don't like DRM either but they play fine with GW and that is all I need. These are more like in-game music anyway but that is just opinion. However, I would never buy DRM protected non-in-game music because it has too much limitations. They must work in any CD/MP3/... player.
